New York City is the mecca when it comes to delicious food. There are just so many different options to sample. From the infamous standard bearers like pizza and hot dogs, to ethnically diverse options, there’s something for everybody to enjoy. In fact, there’s so much to choose from that it can be a bit overwhelming. Restaurant and food stands crowd every street. Instagram influencers can help give ideas of where to grab a bite by showing stunning visual recommendations, but sometimes a deeper dive is needed to suss out the best of the best. And when it comes to finding the best burgers in NYC, there is simply no shortage of candidates.

We love a good burger, and NYC does burgers right. Hamburgers are staples on the menus of most places, and an excellent burger can elevate any restaurant into a must-go trendy hot spot. The types of burgers in the Big Apple are almost as diverse as the city’s residents. There are classic, no frill burgers and decadent hamburgers with wild toppings, and New Yorkers are always pushing the creative envelope to churn out the city’s best. So that begs the question: Just where are the best burgers in NYC?

While it’s hard to crown a definitive winner, these 10 spots will leave you drooling.

JG Melon

Founded in 1972, this burger joint has been slinging delicious burgers to residents of the Upper East Side ever since. A no frills, cash only establishment, JG serves a simple yet delicious cheeseburger. Reminiscent of a great burger you might enjoy at a barbecue, this place is the real deal. Their burgers aren’t huge, but are filling and incredibly juicy.

And while they don’t take reservations and are usually packed to the gills, a burger from JG is well worth the wait. There’s also a second location in the West Village that accepts credit cards, and outside of a rowdy happy hour, seats are usually plentiful.

Minetta Tavern

Don’t let the location on a rowdy West Village street fool you. Minetta Tavern takes their burgers very seriously. An upscale, white table cloth bistro open since 1931, these guys serve the cadillac of hamburgers. Dubbed the Black Label Burger, this signature entree is a heaping behemoth of blended Pat La Freida beef, a mix of short rib, skirt steak, brisket and a dry-aged ribeye. Topped with a generous serving of sautéed onions, this is one of the richer, more decedent burgers on our list.

And while the $28 price tag might raise some eyebrows, each burger is served with a mountain of crispy and delicious french fries. They also offer a less indulgent burger at a smaller price tag, but the Black Label is simply a must try. Minetta gets pretty crowded, so we recommend making a reservation before heading over. When it comes to the best burgers in NYC, almost everyone can agree – Minetta Tavern is at the top of the list.

4 Charles Prime Rib

A sleek and sexy underground West Village hotspot, 4 Charles is a newish and trendy steakhouse dedicated to serving top notch cuts of meat. Fashioned after a speakeasy straight from the roaring ’20s, their burger shines as the menu’s true superstar. A juicy double patty sits between a spongy and buttery bun, and the burger is topped off with melty cheese, chopped onions, pickles and a perfectly cooked, yolky egg. The burger oozes juice to the point that we had it dripping down our arms, but we weren’t complaining.

This burger is advertised as the perfect appetizer to split between 2 people, but good luck trying to only eat one half. Reservations to 4 Charles are near impossible to get, but keep an eye out for a late dining experience, as sometimes tables can open up weeks in advance at the end of the night. We scored a table on a Monday at 10:45pm, and the place was absolutely packed when we left around midnight. For a restaurant with such hype, their burger truly lives up to its billing as one of New York’s best.

Emily

While Emily’s calling card might be the pizza, it’s their fantastic burger that leaves people coming back for more. Originally founded in Brooklyn, they’ve also opened up shop in the West Village, AKA the hamburger district of NYC. Their burger is a unique work of art; they use Pat La Frieda Beef and serve it on a perfectly baked pretzel bun, slathered in their signature Emmy sauce with sautéed onions and American cheese. The sauce and cheese ooze out of this burger at first bite to create a completely delicious mess.

This hotspot takes reservations, and it’s totally worth it to grab a couple of pies as appetizers while you wait for the burger to come out.

Au Cheval

This Chicago import is managed Hog Salt, the same restaurant group that heads up 4 Charles Prime Rib. While the burgers are similar, they should each be enjoyed in their own right. Au Cheval opened up shop in TriBeCa and is fashioned as a trendy, upscale diner with a chic aesthetic that belies just how seriously they take their burgers. They serve a double patty masterpiece between a buttery bun, with melty American cheese, an egg, chopped onions, pickles, and a generous slab of thick cut bacon.

Their elevated burger is the real deal and simply a must try, and is worth the long waits and far out reservations that may be required..

Heidi’s House by the Side of the Road

We’ll forgive folks if they’ve never heard of Heidi’s House before. This quaint and cozy Upper West Side neighborhood establishment borders on secretive; they don’t usually take reservations and it’s easy to walk right past the storefront without even noticing. But it would be foolish to ignore their seriously good food, and delicious burgers.

Served on a freshly baked english muffin, their burgers are thick and juicy, and come slathered with melty cheddar cheese. Add crispy bacon to elevate this burger to a whole other level. A sneaky and lesser known candidate for best burgers in NYC, trust us when we say Heidi’s belongs on every list.

Peter Lugars

Come to this legendary Brooklyn steakhouse for the porterhouse, but stay for the incredible burger. Served only at lunch time, their burger is a simple slice of Americana that’s more substance than style. But don’t let the simple look of the burger belie how tasty it is. The mouthwatering flavor that oozes out of their burger is so good that it doesn’t even need cheese to make for an unforgettable lunch. But who are we kidding? Throw on some American cheese to kick it up a notch.

Keep in mind that Lugar’s doesn’t take credit cards, but with their burger sitting as one of the cheapest options on our list, you can eat like a king without breaking the bank.

Red Hook Tavern

A new aged bar styled after old school New York classics like Corner Bistro and Peter Lugar’s, Red Hook Tavern has been serving up deliciously simple burgers since 2019. And they’ve made a quite a name for themselves. Their burgers have consistently gotten rave reviews, and for great reason.

They serve a classic style, perfectly juicy chuck of beef, with American cheese, and a slice of raw onion. And that’s it. Don’t bother asking for tomato, or a garnish of bacon. This burger stands out by getting so much flavor with so few ingredients.

Corner Bistro

A West Village institution since 1961, Corner Bistro has since expanded their operation to Hells Kitchen and Long Island City to the delight of New Yorker’s everywhere. Settle into an old booth and enjoy a meal that’s been enjoyed a countless number of times since they opened all those decades ago.

Their signature is a perfectly cooked Bistro Burger that comes topped with American cheese and a generous mountain of crispy bacon. Looking for something a little more decadent? Order one of their famous chili burgers, and wash it down with an icy cold beer.

P.J. Clarke’s

One of the oldest restaurants in the city, this salon has been slinging burgers on 3rd Avenue to hungry city residents since 1884(!). With locations now in the Empire Hotel, Financial District, and in Philly and DC, it’s the original location that leaves folks coming back for more.

The burgers are available to order with all the fixings. Mix up different kinds of cheeses, add bacon and eggs, or slather the burger with sauteed onions or even a bearnaise sauce. But it’s the signature Cadillac Burger that we’ve come to love. A perfectly cooked, juicy patty topped generously with American cheese, tomatoes, onions, pickles and finished with delicious double smoked country bacon, this burger is a gut-buster that’s been tried and true for centuries.

*Enjoy a burger recently that you don’t see on this list? Drop us a line, we’re constantly updating our lists, and always on the prowl for more of the best burgers in NYC!

New York City is the mecca when it comes to delicious food. There is almost no type of cuisine that the city is missing.

You can find greats eats in all five of the cities’ boroughs, which can be attributed in part to the sheer number of immigrants that have come over and settled in the city.

When you hear about iconic New York eats you probably think of Pizza, Hot Dogs, or even Burgers. And while they are iconic, there are so many other types of food that are absolute must tries when visiting the city.

We decided to focus on the types of food itself rather than a single restaurant or place that are must tries. New York is infamous for old school haunts that have been serving up classic dishes for decades, but the city also has its fair share of “new kids on the block” – or places that have recently burst onto the culinary scene and can compete with the best of the best.

A good travel tip before you go. Follow food bloggers on Instagram that specialize in a specific city. We already compiled a list of the best food bloggers to follow in NYC  .

Here is our list of must try foods for your next visit to the Big Apple.

Pizza

We know – we just told you to think beyond pizza, but it wouldn’t be a list about New York city food without this being on the top of the list. When you think of New York pizza, generally you’re thinking of a very specific type- the apt named New York style slice. This style is generally made into a large pie with a reasonable thick crust and cut into wide slices. You can travel around the world and find great pizza, but only in New York can you find the best of this style.

Joe’s Pizza is usually regarded as one of the best slices that you can find. It’s a no frills city institution with a perfect slice that’s always done the right way.

If you are looking for something a little more unique you have to check out Prince Street Pizza. The Soho Square slice is covered in crispy, spicy pepperoni on top of a delicious diablo sauce. It may not be a truly traditional slice, but you will not regret a stop into this trendy pizza hotspot.

If you are a true pizza lover and want to try all of the top spots, checkout a list of all of the best places to get a slice in the city.

Deli Sandwich

If you stroll down the streets of New York City you’re bound to notice just how many corner stores, bodegas, and deli’s we have. They truly are just about everywhere. These spots are staples in most neighborhoods and are a traditional stop for New Yorkers of all kinds to grab a quick bite to eat.

Many of these delis were started by Jewish immigrants, and are still hugely popular spots to enjoy delicious sandwiches.

Over the years a few places have stood out from the rest. They serve insanely big sandwiches of fresh, roasted meats, stacked high on typically on rye bread. While tourists pack these spots as well, it’s for a good reason, and not something to overlook.

The most storied sandwich joint in New York, Katz’s Deli has been around for years and serves up some of the best pastrami and corned beef sandwiches the city has to offer. I suggest you bring a friend along, because these sandwiches are seriously huge.

2nd Avenue Deli is not nearly as overrun with tourists as Katz’s, but the food still packs a punch. Don’t forget to get additional Jewish staples like latkes and matzo ball soup.

Bagels

Bagels are another New York city food staple that you can thank Jewish immigrants for. The city is flush with bagel shops, and this delicious breakfast food extends far into the surrounding suburbs throughout the New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state area. You can grab a bagel from any bodega, street cart, or coffee shop, and it’s bound to at least be decent enough for most breakfasts.

There’s nothing more New York than stopping at a street cart to grab a cheap bagel and coffee to start your day.

But if you are looking for higher quality bagels, ones that will really knock your socks off, here is a must try spot.

Russ & Daughters is probably most famous for their bagel and lox sandwich. They have a massive variety of sturgeon and cream cheese to pair with their delicious bagels, and if you are willing to wait a bit in line it’s totally worth it.

If you are looking for a more low key stop in bagel type of place, the city also has plenty of them to offer.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B8RkpmvH94_

Murrays is one of our favorites, with a few locations to be found throughout the city. This is a no frills type of shop that does bagels right. On a Saturday or Sunday morning there will almost certainly be a line, but it’s usually pretty manageable. It’s a great place for a grab and go breakfast on the way to work, or an ideal spot to grab a bag of bagels for the family on the weekend.

Chicken and Rice

If there is one food that makes a huge difference when you eat it out in the streets, its chicken and rice, most commonly known as “street meat”. You can find a halal food cart or truck on almost every corner of the city, and it’s been popularized over years of being a super affordable, yet delicious meal.

Nowadays you will even see the most famous spot, The Halal Guys, with stores open all throughout the country. While I have visit some of these spots and the food still tastes good, it’s not the same. You simply MUST eat this out in the street to get the full New York experience. I wouldn’t consider getting it any other way.

If you’re looking for some true New York City food, then street meat is the way to go. The Halal Guys is famous for serving a large plate of food, for a cheap price, topped with their signature white sauce, and an extremely hot red sauce. But seriously – be super careful with it, as the heat of the sauce can be shocking.

You can find the original street cart on 53rd and 6th outside the Hilton hotel. But be wary, there are tons of street carts throughout the area and city at large that try to mimic the iconic look of the Halal Guys, but serve up a sub par product. If you want the best I’d recommend the original, no matter how long the line is.

Hot Dog

We almost finished out this list without including the iconic hot dog, but we just couldn’t do it. These city staples are must tries when visiting New York, and for good reason. Nothing hits the spot quite like a well-cooked hot dog.

While you can grab a hot dog from any stand on the street, we recommend hitting up one of the famous corner spots instead.

Grey’s Pappaya is one of the most well-known spots, serving up cheap hot dogs and interesting juice blends. It’s an authentic New York experience to walk into one of their standing only stores, grab a couple of hot dogs and a drink before being on your way.

Egg Cream

This one is a bit of a throwback but an egg cream is a old school New York drink made up of milk, seltzer, and chocolate syrup. You can still find it in parts of Brooklyn where the drink was first made popular. If you have any trouble finding it you can always follow our recipe to make your own egg cream.

New York City food is about so much more than just the food itself, it’s about the eating culture, the experiences. Some foods can be replicated elsewhere, or even prepared at home, but it just doesn’t offer the same satisfying experience. From cheap to expensive eats, this city really does have it all. And does it all extremely well. On your next trip we suggest making sure you stop at all types of places and to get into the food scene as locals would. Your stomach will thank us.

There is no shortage of amazing pizza in New York City. Seriously.

You’d be hard pressed to go just one block without finding signs that advertise the “BEST PIZZA IN NYC!” or “$1 A SLICE 24/7.” With pizza shops on every corner, there is no shortage of places that are iconic for their delicious slices and unique twists on pizza. But with so many options, it can be hard to narrow down the best NYC slice.

We decided to attempt to create our own at pizza at home by using the best pan pizza method. Sadly it didn’t come close to the true deliciousness of an authentic New York slice.

People might wonder if New York pizza is really that different, if it could possibly taste that much better than slices made elsewhere. The answer is a resounding YES!

New York is defined by it’s delicious pizza, but it’s not the only food it’s known for. Check out pizza and other food that everyone must eat when visiting New York City.

The pizza shops in New York are as diverse as the city itself, and though most are of the famed “New York” style, creativity abounds. Spanning from the makers of the thick and heavy slice at Artichoke to the sizzling, spicy, pepperoni slice at Prince Street Pizza, there is truly a slice for anyone.

So where are the the truly iconic places to go for the best NYC slice? We tried our best to help tackle this important issue.

Joe’s Pizza (@joespizzanyc)

Best NYC Slice joes-pizza
Classic New York Slice

The original Joe’s Pizza sits proudly in what is arguably the top seat of the pantheon of the best NYC slice.

This legendary Greenwich Village establishment has been slinging delicious pizza since 1975. Serving up slices to some of Hollywood’s most famous customers like Leo DiCaprio, LeBron James and Bradley Cooper, to name a few, Joe’s has a special place in the heart of many New Yorkers and visitors alike.

The sauce is perfectly balanced, slightly sweet and tangy, with the gooey cheese radioed out flawlessly. The crust is also quite on-point, crispy with a slight char. You’ll find people flocking to Joe’s for a slice throughout the day or deep into the night. Considered by many to have the best NYC slice, Joe’s resume and perfected pizza is hard to beat.

In fact, I think I may go grab a slice right now…

Prince Street Pizza (@psp_nyc)

Best NYC Slice Prince Street Pizza
Spicy Roni Pie

Walk into Prince Street Pizza in Soho and you’ll see countless pictures on the walls of celebrities and locals that flock to this infamous pizza joint. Take a peek behind the counter and you’ll start drooling when you see the thick cut pepperoni slices.

OK, I’m officially starving.

Even though it’s only been around since 2012, Prince Street has quickly become an institution for Manhattan folks craving something different than the standard thin slice. Their signature pie is the SoHo Square, which has fresh mozzarella, the Morano family’s homemade sauce, and crust that is light and flaky but full of excellent flavor.

Scroll down the official Instagram page of Prince Street Pizza and you’ll see photos of celebrities ranging from Shailene Woodley to Steven Tyler enjoying a bite.

Don’t miss out on this must visit destination when out and about around Soho. Day or night expect to wait in a line, but trust us…this pizza is totally worth it.

Artichoke Pizza (@artichokepizza)

Best NYC Slice artichoke-basille
Famous Artichoke Pizza

Two of the best things that New York City has to offer just so happen to be right next door to each other: Artichoke Pizza and The the historic Comedy Cellar.

Make a night out of it. Grab a slice of Artichoke then go next door and laugh for an hour and a half at the cellar (or 6 hours if Dave Chappelle shows up).

Open till 4AM, Artichoke is one of the staples of New York City, and one of the top places to get a late night bite. Pro tip: Be careful not to burn your mouth when it comes fresh out of the oven.

Rubirosa Pizza (@rubirosa_nyc)

Famous for the Vodka and Tie-Die pies, this soho restaurant doesn’t do slices, but their thin crust pizzas are small and delicious enough that you could probably crush an entire pie your self. Like many other Italian restaurants in the area, Rubirosa is family run and the perfect casual environment for a weeknight dinner.

Williamsburg Pizza (@williamsburgpizza)

williamsburg-pizza
Grandma Style Pie

Williamsburg Pizza seems to be some kind of a movement. Now with 6 locations spread around Manhattan and Brooklyn, you can be sure to find a location to satisfy pizza cravings. This pizza joint is known for their experimental toppings, such as apple and wild mushrooms.

As far as the best NYC slices go, Williamsburg pizza is well on its way to legendary status. PS: they just started serving grandma slices at their Bowery location!

Roberta’s Pizza (@Robertaspizza)

robertas-pizza
Rustic Neapolitan Style Pies

Roberta’s is that rare combination of unpretentiousness paired with next level preparation, and a dash of funk, rock and art. These guys serve not only some of the best artisanal pies in NYC, but also some of the highest quality dishes like roasted lamb and duck prosciutto around (to die for). They are true to their roots with a laid back Brooklyn vibe and the space, and although a bit tricky to find, the resturant features a massive outdoor space thats meant to be enjoyed picnic style.

Grab your friends, a few beers, and head over to Roberta’s for an experience you wont forget.

Lions & Tigers & Squares Detroit Pizza (@lionsandtigersandsquares)

Although we’re talking New York pizzas, a new pizza from a different city has emerged on the scene, and it’s is here to stay. Lions & Tigers & Squares recently opened in Chelsea. Featuring a Detroit style pan pizza, this pizza joint has been delighting the hungry masses with their unique pies. Similar in style to a Chicago deep dish, but with a way lighter and fluffier crust these individual sized pies are definitely worth a try.
